Macotela’s Cross Stands as a Beacon to Puerto Los Cabos
“Macotela’s Cross,” the steel and bronze work of Mexican sculptor Gabriel Macotela stands majestically, eighty feet above the Puerto Los Cabos marina as a welcoming beacon to visitors. Designed and installed as a symbol of love, inner life and spiritual attunement, “Macotela’s Cross” stands as a landmark and point of reference to help guide local residents and fishermen home.
In year’s past, the presence of the Cross has tended to fade as the sun set and the lights of the port came up. All that changed recently when Puerto Los Cabos developer Eduardo Sanchez Navarro had a vision, and hired lighting experts from the “El Puente” team to light the cross up as a nocturnal beacon.
Excited by the opportunity, El Puente’s Jules Daniel as lighting designer, Philippe Frene as Project Manager, and Diego Rivera as enginereering and technical supervisor came on board for the project. Having designed and installed dramatic lighting scenarios in a number of major locations worldwide including France, Monaco, the Persian Gulf Emirates and Egypt, including the Kings’ Valley magical lighting, the team was thrilled by the challenge the project provided.
Puerto Los Cabos’ history and sociology coupled with the symbolism of the cross provided inspiration as the team worked to develop a design concept. The Cross’ supernatural character and link with the sky is expressed by a vertical flood light, produced by a Philips’ ArenaVision device. Lighting sequences include a dramatic and colorful 10 minute show generated by Starway’s TowerKolor projectors, all connected to a DMX circuit and placed on the ground inside the Cross structure. The 6 kW requirements of the lighting devices are supplied to the system, both in 220 and 440 volts.
Soon, in a forthcoming addition, the lighting scenography will be enriched with sparkling lights and synchronized music, set to spotlight special events at Puerto Los Cabos, much the same as at the Eiffel Tower.
